Introduction

Biochemistry is a branch of medicine that deals with study of biomolecules and their analysis in various body fluids. The subject is included in the first year of MBBS curriculum which helps students to understand biochemical basis of life processes which are related to human health, nutrition and disease states. It provides foundation to understand biochemical basis of disease progression, mechanism of action of drugs, toxins, poisons etc. The branch is evolving and plays an important role in development of novel scientific approaches in disease diagnosis and prognosis. Apart from contribution to human health, biochemical research is also useful in agriculture, food production and various industries.

Mission:

To provide scientific and evidence based knowledge to medical students.
To orient medical students about various life processes at cellular and molecular level and application of that knowledge to diagnose and treat various diseases.
To demonstrate and provide knowledge of various analytical techniques related to biochemistry used to screen susceptible population and diagnose diseases.
To inspire and stimulate students to do research in biochemistry.

Vision:

To create interactive and enthusiastic environment for the students so that they learn basics of biochemistry and solve clinical problems.
To make students aware of importance of biochemistry in disease diagnosis and treatment.
To make newer analytical techniques available to the patients coming to the hospital.
To establish tertiary level laboratory with special biochemical investigations.
To contribute in biochemical research to make the laboratory investigations useful for accurate diagnosis and affordable to all needy patients.

Functions and Objectives:

The prime objective is to provide competency based medical education to the medical students as per curriculum.
To provide sound knowledge about biomolecules and their importance in disease diagnosis and prognosis. To teach students the techniques available to analyse them with interpretation of results and data.
To provide quality education and training to the students as well as staff working in the department and laboratory.
To provide quality laboratory services to the users of the clinical biochemistry laboratory.
